South Whittier to host anonymous gun buyback event

SOUTH WHITTIER – Residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted firearms this weekend during a Gifts for Guns buyback event hosted in partnership with Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

The event takes place Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Whittier Community Resource Center, 10750 Laurel Avenue in South Whittier. Participants can exchange firearms for gift cards, with no questions asked and complete anonymity guaranteed.

Firearms must be transported unloaded and stored in the trunk of a vehicle. No walk-ups will be allowed, organizers emphasized.

Gift card values vary depending on the type of firearm surrendered:

  • Non-working firearms or parts: $50

  • Working pistols, rifles, or shotguns: $100

  • Ghost guns (no serial numbers): $200

  • Assault rifles such as AR-15s and AK-47s: $300

Organizers noted that 3D-printed and homemade firearms will be evaluated on-site to determine their value.

The program aims to reduce gun violence by removing unwanted firearms from homes and ensuring they are disposed of safely.
