La Mirada student wins Congressional Art Competition

Rep. Linda Sanchez and competition winner Maria Varquez of La Mirada High School.

Rep. Linda T. Sánchez announced the winners of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition, recognizing the artistic achievements of high school students from across California’s 38th Congressional District, which includes portions of Downey.

The annual competition was held May 5 at Liberty Community Plaza in Whittier and featured artwork from students throughout the district.

“Every year, this competition reminds me of the incredible talent we have right here in our community,” Sánchez said in a statement. “These young artists pour their hearts into their work and it shows. I’m proud to recognize their talent and thrilled that our winner’s artwork will be on display in the United States Capitol for all of America to see.”

First place was awarded to Maria Varquez of La Mirada High School for her painting, “Merkado.” In addition to receiving a $1,000 scholarship, her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Second place went to Samantha Lin of Glen A. Wilson High School for her drawing, “Venomous Wealth,” earning a $400 scholarship. Santiago Meza, also of Glen A. Wilson High School, received third place and a $300 scholarship for his painting, “Hunger.”

Elijah Vilchis of Glen A. Wilson High School earned the Fan Favorite award for his drawing, “Insecurity,” along with a $200 scholarship. Juan Garcia of El Rancho High School received honorable mention and a $100 scholarship for his photograph, “Emerald at the Edge.”

The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored each spring by the U.S. House of Representatives to encourage and recognize artistic achievement among high school students nationwide.
