NORWALK – Gardenhill Elementary School teacher Julie Wright has been named a 2026 Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year, recognizing her dedication to students as she enters her 30th year in education.

Wright, who teaches in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, was honored for fostering academic excellence, belonging and student success.

Inspired by a family of educators and her experiences tutoring elementary students in college, Wright has focused on building classroom communities centered on kindness, collaboration and high expectations, according to the district.

“Julie Wright represents the gold standard of Norwalk-La Mirada Unified,” Superintendent Tania Magaña said. “For nearly 30 years, she has inspired students through her passion, dedication and unwavering belief in every child's potential.”

Magaña said Wright’s ability to help students feel valued, supported and empowered has made a lasting impact on generations of learners.

Wright credited colleagues and family members with supporting and inspiring her throughout her career.

“This recognition is very special to me as I am about to celebrate 30 years as an educator,” Wright said. “As I reflect back, I am so grateful to have been surrounded by amazing colleagues who have become family to me. We always hear that it takes a village to raise a child, and I know it takes a village to teach one, too.”

She said the honor provides an opportunity to highlight her district, school and coworkers.

Wright also draws inspiration from the 16 teachers in her family, including aunts and cousins who share classroom ideas and discuss their students at family gatherings.

“Our impact on students is not just academic; we are showing them the value of learning and what it means to serve others with our whole hearts,” Wright said. “And to my students, I want them to know that I believe in them and will always be their biggest cheerleader no matter where life takes them.”

The Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year program recognizes educators for excellence in instruction, leadership, innovation and service to students.

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified serves approximately 13,600 students across 29 schools in Norwalk and La Mirada.
