SOUTH WHITTIER – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved an ambitious plan to add 8.4 miles of new bike lanes and a range of street upgrades across unincorporated South Whittier, marking a major step toward safer and more accessible local transportation.

On Nov. 4, supervisors voted to move forward with the South Whittier Community Bikeway Access Improvements project, which will bring 4.6 miles of Class II bike lanes and 3.8 miles of Class III bike routes to the area. The improvements will extend to streets adjoining the cities of Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada and will bring new bicycle infrastructure to within one mile of the Metrolink Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Station.

“We are not only adding bike lanes — we are repairing and expanding sidewalks for pedestrians, adding trees, and improving signage to make our community safer and more accessible for everyone,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose Fourth District includes South Whittier. “This project is a major investment in a better quality of life for South Whittier and its neighbors. I’m proud that we’re now a big step closer to making this vision a reality.”

The $27 million project will include resurfacing pavement, reconstructing curbs and gutters, building bulb-outs and curb ramps, landscaping medians, and replacing streetlights. Crews will also install new wayfinding signage and upgrade traffic signals with pedestrian push buttons that include audio and vibration features for accessibility.

Importantly, officials noted that the new bike lanes and routes will not reduce the number of existing travel lanes or parking spaces.

Construction is expected to begin in July 2026 and be completed by January 2028. Funding will come from a combination of County road funds, Metro grants, and federal sources. The City of La Mirada will contribute $67,000 toward the project, while Santa Fe Springs will add $18,000.
